People with a disability

Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows 3.6 million Australians have some kind of disability affecting their vision, hearing, movement or cognition. To ensure we cater to a broad range of user needs we selected design elements that are:

  • visually appealing
  • consistent, simple and meaningful
  • create code that supports assistive technologies.

Assistive technologies

Assistive technologies include screen readers and switch technology, are used by visually or motor impaired people to navigate websites. Where there is no equivalent experience for a blind or visually-impaired user, we offer the information in an alternative format such as braille, audio, CD, e-text and large print.

Other features to improve accessibility include:

  • alt tags on all images used within the site to assist screen reading technologies
  • descriptive links to assist visually-impaired people to navigate the site
  • acrobat 6, a PDF Reader that supports screen reading technologies
  • larger font options that can be set across the entire site.

Slow connection speeds

We have designed pages to cater to:

  • people who view the web with images switched off (such as many rural or remote users)
  • people who prefer not to download plug-ins (such as flash player)
  • people who experience slower than average connection speeds (such as rural and remote users or people using older modems).
