Prescribed Medical Certificates (PMCs) are written by legally qualified medical practitioners in relation to a worker's compensation injury. In South Australia PMCs can be lodged in electronic or paper version.
Electronic PMC (ePMC)
In conjunction with medical software vendors, WorkCover has developed an electronic Prescribed Medical Certificate (ePMC) which enables a simple electronic process that integrates with the doctors business practices. The PMC is saved directly to the patient database and securely emailed to WorkCover SA for processing. A fee is paid for each PMC received via the prescribed email format. For providers who do not want to use the email facility, the PMC can be printed from the patient’s record and given to the patient, as with the original paper version.
The South Australian electronic PMC takes advantage of software developed for the Health Insurance Commission’s Public Key Infrastructure and utilises a digital certificate issued by the Health eSignature Authority (HeSA). WorkCover utilises our private key to unlock the PMC. If we cannot open the PMC using this key, we know the PMC has potentially been tampered with and we will contact you directly. This process ensures security in transmission.
Note: WorkCover’s public key must be installed on your computer using the instructions provided to you by your software vendor. If this key is not installed you will not be able to email the PMC to WorkCover.
The following medical patient software applications contain an electronic PMC (ePMC) function:
- Medical Director
- Med Tech 32
- ZedMed
- Genie.
Electronic PMC via Medical Director
WorkCover has developed an electronic PMC facility within Medical Director 2. You will need a minimum of Medical Director (version 2.76). Detailed installation instructions, security features and operating instructions are available from Medical Director.
We are currently working with Medical Director to ensure the ePMC facility will also be available in MD3. If you have upgraded from MD2 and lost the ePMC facility please contact WorkCover on (08) 8233 2452 for a manual based work around.

Patient software Security Certificate upgrade notification for June 2007
The emailing of PMCs (ePMCs) from your clinic to WorkCover relies on an encryption certificate (PKI certificate). For security reasons the encryption certificate expires every two years. The next expiry date is 30 June 2007. At this time a new certificate will need to be installed into your software to enable your practice to continue to use the ePMC email facility and to be paid the fee. Advice and instructions detailing the upgrade process will be made available prior to the certificate expiry date by your software vendors.

Electronic PMC via this website
You can lodge a form directly from this website. To use the ePMC facility within our website you need to obtain a unique username and password. Complete the PMC application form and return it to us. We will contact you with your unique login details.
Note: A completed PMC does not mean that a claim has been made. To lodge a claim the injured worker must fill out a Worker Claim Application.

Paper PMC
The pad version is for those doctors who wish to continue to hand write PMCs. This method does not attract a fee. Requests for pads of PMCs must be in writing on letterhead stating the name and provider number of the doctor. These requests can be posted to WorkCover or faxed to (08) 8233 2466.
